The Douglas A-26 Invader is an American, twin-engine, all-metal light bomber. The prototype first flew on July 10, 1942. Due to its excellent aerodynamics, high performance, and ease of operation, the aircraft served during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The last A-26 (now designated A-26A) was not retired until 1969! A total of 2,452 of these aircraft were built. During World War II, the A-26 was built in numerous versions, of which two are particularly noteworthy. The A-26B ("attack") version featured a closed nose housing eight 12.7 mm machine guns, 20-30 mm cannons, or a single 75 mm cannon. The A-26B ("bomber") version had a glazed nose housing Norden-style sights. This version was used for precision bombing. Technical data: Maximum speed: 571 km/h; rate of climb 10.2 m/s, practical ceiling: 6736 m, maximum range: 2250 km, armament (depending on version): up to 14 km Browning caliber 12.7 mm and underslung weights ranging from 1800 to 3600 kg.
