Do chwili obecnej (2018 r.) wyprodukowano 3480 czołgów tego typu. Leopard 2 jest napędzany silnikiem MTU MB 873 Ka 501 o mocy 1500 KM. Uzbrojenie pojazdu to pojedyncza armata Rheinmetall Rh-M-120 kal. 120 mm oraz 2 karabiny maszynowe MG3 kal. 7,62 mm.
