History:
A biplane fighter aircraft, built in 1934 by the Gloster Aircraft Company as a development of the Gloster Gauntlet. The prototype first flew in 1935, boasting a carefully crafted aerodynamic silhouette and powered by a Bristol Mercury IX radial engine. The aircraft was designated the Gloster Gladiator Mk.I and launched into series production. In 1938, a subsequent Mk.II version was launched, using the new Bristol Mercury VIIIA radial engine. Gloster Gladiators were used by 30 RAF squadrons before World War II, and during the war, they fought in France, Norway, North Africa, and the Middle East. One squadron participated in the Battle of Britain. In 1940, the aircraft were deemed obsolete, withdrawn from service, and series production ended.
